About Millipedes
There are many species of millipedes in Indiana, but the common pest species is usually ½ to 1 ½ inches long, with two pairs of short legs on each of its many body segments. When millipedes are intimidated, they curl their bodies into a tight spiral. Usually, they live in undeveloped land, as they prefer to live under rocks or in piles of decaying wet leaves, but they are also common in landscaping with lots of dirt and plants, as well as beneath structures like dog houses and sheds. However, millipedes do not like very wet feet, so when heavy rain falls on our Indiana clay, they leave Mother Nature, crawl around on sidewalks and lawns, and head for dry shelter in people’s homes. They do not attack or harm humans, but they are nuisances.
