About Fleas & Ticks in Central Indiana
At least 30 kinds of fleas have been found on mammals in Indiana. Of those, only the cat flea is a serious pest of pets and humans. Regardless of its name, the cat flea is the flea that most often infests dogs and other companion animals.
When fleas bite, they can consume up to 15 times their own body weight in blood, causing anemia or significant blood loss in our furry friends. Animals pick up the fleas outside, even in their own backyard, and bring them in the house. Treating fleas inside the home becomes difficult due to their small size and rapid reproduction cycle. In their 21- to 28-day lifespan, each female can lay up to 2000 eggs. These eggs can hatch and mature into adults in 2 weeks but can also lay dormant for up to 4 months before hatching.
Fifteen species of ticks live in Indiana, but only three of those species are dangerous to human and pet health – the Blacklegged Tick, American Dog Tick, and the Lone Star Tick. Hard ticks can survive wherever there is a significant host presence, but they thrive in damp, wooded areas where there is a lot of shade and places to hide in such as tall grass and leaf litter. Ticks often hide in landscaping plants and lawns, especially ones that have puddles. Ticks can cause a host of health problems in pets and their owners: anemia and blood loss, skin infection, tick paralysis, and Lyme disease.
