Voles are common in our region, and they eat a variety of plants, including gardens and turf grass. Although voles look like house mice, they have shorter tails and blunt noses. They are most active at dawn and twilight. Some signs that you have a vole problem are:
- Narrow 1-2” runways in your grass, as if a hose had lain on the ground for too long
- Vole burrow holes in the lawn or near the bases of trees
- Gnaw marks on woody plants
- Piles of vole droppings, which are shaped like rice but colored brown or green
- Patches on your lawn where the grass is noticeably shorter
- Dying plants that have no root system when lifted out of the soil
